A Brief History of Womens Council of Realtors

In 1924, most local real estate associations were resistant to women in the real estate industry and also as participants in the local associations. On a train ride home from the National Associations convention in Washington D.C., several members of the California Real Estate Association formed a Womens Division. Fourteen years later, Joseph Catherine, the 1938 president of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (now the National Association Of Realtors) was impressed with the potential of women in real estate and encouraged the formation of the Womens Council.  Local Associations were still resistant to women, but the National Association of Realtors was ready to recognize women in the industry and a positive vote resulted in the formation of a womens division at the annual Convention held in Milwaukee in November, 1938.  Thirty-seven women represented 9 states at that meeting, and the Womens Council of Realtors was born!

There are now more than 300 chapters with over 12,000 members, men and women who support the objectives of WCR and serve the industry, the community and their fellow Realtors
